Thanks for the response, Satamax, My chimney is about 20 feet from thimble to crown, thimble is 4' off the basement slab, chimney ascends thru the house. It's clay flue tiles inside chimney block, with a 1" gap around flue. Also there is a clean out door about 18" from slab, would u recommend inputting there for added stack height? This is all academic, as I have been working the 6" system in above posts; but when I came across this 8" SS pipe, I got a little excited! I plan on constructing the riser with the 8" pipe as a liner insulated by a less expensive mix like we see on lots of posts, fire clay/ perlite perhaps, or some such recipe. Any suggestions towards that y'all? Eric

Eric, do tests before. Make your core and heat riser. Barrel and all that. Then add some pipe, untill your stove stalls. May be you could get away with three more feet than your stalling lengh, once cobbed.

Hey there Satamax, Maybe I didn't say correctly, 8" pipe to be used in conjunction with 8" sized batch box, going to 6" chimney. Not lookin to go to a bench, rather more like Morticcio's single bell. Will the 8" batch and 8" riser give issues exhausting to 6" chimney? Sorry for being unclear, bench would be nice, just don't have the room or resources to go that way! BTW, any update on the purchase of the site u recently posted on? Wishing the best for you and a space to call your own, Eric VW

Eric, 8 incher single bell is no prob exhausting in a six inch pipe i would say, if you are prepared to loose heat to gain speed! One thing i would do, is to use a tuneable plunger tube, to adjust for the proper isa, for best performance. Lest say two tubes sliding around each other, permiting a foot of movement between 3 inches, to 15 inches height in the bell. And you are pretty safe. Remember, metal is doomed, so think of a way to be able to change the SS heat riser in two or three years. HTH.

Good advice, Just got excited, maybe too much, over the close to "freebie" pipe. Yeah, single bell, either way I go, 6" or 8." Brainstorming fart, Peter's drummed test batch box had a drum below, then some above. Morticcio's core is lower in his single bell; can moving the core higher in the bell aid stratification? Really looking for the best situation for heating the house from the basement, much like our old (pig of a)wood stove did last winter. It worked, but cost a lot of cut and split time! Thanks again for your speedy response, satamax, Eric VW

Well, if your system can work with a flue port lower than the batch box, you could raise the box. But you should check that bvefore. Will you live in the basement? Because basement rockets are not nice. Between the fact that you have to tend theses every 20 minutes at least, and the stack effect of the whole house. They can be a pain.

Aaaah, stack effect, Well, satamax, tending the stove is not a problem because in the cold months I spend a lot of time in the basement tinkering, woodworking and such. Our house is less than 1000 sq ft, the wood stove kept it plenty warm last few winters we've been here- I realize there will be differences between the 2 wood burning appliances. But I've seen other rockets in the basement or at least a 1st or lower floor, here in the forum pages, so I'm hopeful. The thing will be right at the foot of the stairwell going up to the kitchen, same as old wood eatin' stove, I'll try some pics and maybe a 3d model of the layout of the place... I appreciate all the input and help- Eric

I've always thought it would be neat if a basement stove had some radiation and some mass, and when the flue goes to the second floor, add a second, small bell with some nominal mass as a sort of supplemental heat rather than having to rely on air circulation alone to move heat from basement to upstairs. Not sure if anyone has done that yet or not.

Good idea DCish, Perhaps a quick sketch would help me visualize- if u've got a few minutes? Lost out on the chance to upload some photos and 3D sketches of our space for the rocket heater; my wife went finger to broken wine glass and lost the battle while doing the dishes... Hospital collected some money for the stitches, tho! Looks like I'll be pulling double duty around the house for a while! Eric

Hey DCish, thanks for the sketch! Link worked fine. It's an interesting concept and as soon as I have a minute to put some pics up of the chimney and basement and main floor, we can look at options. Off to work. Y'all have a great day- Eric

Cool beans!
By way of full disclosure, I'm not one of the expert builders here, I've only built a couple of backyard batch box mockups thus far. However, I do heat with a wood stove, and I have read practically everything that's been posted to the forum since it started, so I'm not throwing ideas out in a complete vacuum...

Gotcha DCish, But the question begs to be asked- do you still heat w/ the wood stove? I would be headed in the same direction as last year if it weren't for this forum and Permsteading forum. I love cutting and stacking wood, been doing it since I was a kid with my family, but the thought of burning ALL that wood for so much less gain, excessive chimney sweeping, and lackluster output of the woodstove in general, has pushed me in this direction! I'm just sayin'. Well, since I just got in from a carpentry side job after a full day at my regular job, I probably won't be able to post our house pics.... Maybe tomorrow. Eric
