Ok, thanks Morticcio. Yes the round mould is proving more challenging than the whole core moulding process! My chimney is 6" square, would exceeding that measurement in the riser, say 6 3/8" diameter be an issue? thanks again for everyone's input. Y'all are like a big group of mentors to us newbies! Does anyone know about the product Greenlite 22 PL and it's dry out schedule? Just cast some riser sleeves and am unsure if I've thrown $100 down the drain!!! Probably shouldn't have cast them in sona tubes either! Oh, r&d. The supplier neglected to give me more than the product info sheet... And I neglected to ask more questions. Will update results, good or bad, but if any suggestions, would really appreciate it! thx, Eric VW

Got it straightened out. Don't cast refractory on Sunday, especially if you don't have access to ALL the info! EVW

To explain, as I forgot to when inserting image, The Ring at the top of this riser column will eventually fit into a corresponding seat in the next batch box cast. I might even ditch these sleeves for a split molded casting, so vibration can be done on the flat, like the core halves. Any input about vibration frequency and duration, y'all? Thanks for the continuing input!!! Eric VW

Eric, did it crumble or just split? If it's just a split or even two, you could hold it with steel wire.
For the vibration, not too long. Otherwise the agregate goes to the bottom.

Thanks Satamax for the reassuring response, it's got 2 cracks, 180 degrees apart, picked up some stainless steel ductwork clamps today to hold it together. Spoke with a salesman from ANH refractory today and he set me straight on some product knowledge and processing info. Great dude! Gonna take a few days off from rocketing while I construct some cornhole boards for my mother-in-law's bday present! Ok, I might still fiddle in the evening hours with the batch box... Aside from small fires, anyone use different dry out techniques? Can't rightly put cast pieces in our kitchen oven! My wife would go ballistic! thanks again for the comments and advice, EVW p.s. Where's that Natasha from Kentucky? AWOL?

Hope these Photobucket images work. These cracks have held their shape, even when cool. Learning curve! EricVW

Frustrated!!!!!!! Can someone please tell me how to insert the link. I've tried copying and pasting the link from Photobucket, erased the 'http' on the 'insert image' box on the toolbar above on this page, and all I can do is paste the 'direct' address from photobucket. About to throw this laptop! BTW, like computers as much as the cracks in the picture. EVW

Eric.
Breathe. Relax. This will all work itself out.
I can see the pictures.
Now I have to run. Cheers!

Thanks for putting out the fire, Daryl! Altho, with this photobucket mishap cropping up again, I'm starting to warm up again ! So the pic of the broke piece snapped off at one of the cracks, the full riser in the other pic also lost its ring which would've fit into 2nd riser. Not totally discouraged, just need a better, more controlled way to dry them out. No pottery kilns in the area, and small fires in batch box don't seem utterly reliable enough. Any suggestions, other than 2 half cast riser, as pertains to casting such parts. Please, Karl, go easy on me! thanks for the advice, folks! Eric VW

Quick question for anyone who's got a second, I scored a piece of 8" SS flue pipe at work, thick stuff from our new oven, about 1/16" wall. After a fruitless search, I have this question- is it not advised to build an 8" system that exhausts to a 6" chimney? Have a feeling I know the answer, but couldn't confirm w/ my forum search, so was curious about some input. Thanks in advance! Eric

It can be done, depending on your chimney draft.
