@max, Hello, are you still there, and are you able to say something about first fire?

Not yet Peter, as i'm busy building my crane extension. Few days of metalworking? May be this afternoon, if i'm on my own doing things.

Peter, i've progressed a bit. Look what i've found at my suplier. Still need to cut them to fit the box a bit better. And i've cut the stainless tube to hold the vermiculite. Realy, for the moment i'm leaning towards using the big water heater. 40cm gap between top of heat riser and top of the bell would be OK? Thanks again for your help. Bye. Max.

Realy, for the moment i'm leaning towards using the big water heater. 40cm gap between top of heat riser and top of the bell would be OK? Looking good! That water heater tank will be OK at the dimension you quote. It certainly will work, but three times as much will work also. With this tank, you will not be able to load the stove fully otherwise you will be scorched and all your furniture as well. But it's a viable alternative, yes. This will be as speedy as my experiment, using two barrels on top and it's still not enough. ;D

Peter, with your two barrels, what's your exhaust temp?

Peter, with your two barrels, what's your exhaust temp? About 250 degrees Celsius. (482 F.) The outside of the uppermost barrel 320 C. (608 F.), 4" from the top.

That's mad temps, with my stubborn workshop rocket. At 5 or 6 metres after the heat riser, you can fit your hand into the flue No prob.

Max, So your exhaust pipe is too small and the chimney is too wide! And made of brickwork, both cooling and slowing down the exhaust gases. It's about time you'll build your own house and workshop.
