Nice work, Martyn. I like how you used that loose vermiculite, too.

Thanks, I think it is safer than ceramic fibre products?

Yeah, supposedly even the dust from it is non-carcinogenic if inhaled. They also use it as an edible feed additive for livestock because it holds and releases vitamins and nutrients slowly as it moves through the gut, without harming the animal’s digestive tract.

Just curious, what would happen if you made the restriction symmetrical instead? Possibly, a double vortex would form. Some of my experiments from 10+ years ago pointed to a double vortex as the more efficient one as opposed to the single variant. Probably due to a longer stay in the riser tube.

Yes it works just fine or at least a double vortex will form but only while the stove is running flat out, as soon as the fire dies even slightly the rams horn disappears. I will try to get some better footage but with this design, with the upstand in the centre of the vortex, there are in fact mutable mini vortex's forming. I tried without the stainless pipe in place and you dont get the same effect. We are having an Indian summer just at the moment with 25c and zero wind so lighting the fire is very uncomfortable but, I will be doing more testing soon….

Brilliant! Love the tube oven. Love the colors, how does the paint hold up near the heat?

Thanks, it is Just plain water based house paint, seems to last well. The base goes up to around 90- 100c (just about boiling point) although it takes a few hours to get that hot. I have seen a few paint bubbles around the chimney exit but a once a year repaint is all that is required. However the barrel needs replacing and I plan to use high temp paint on the next one, maybe a red or a silver colour.

Looking great, Martyn. Have you ever tried a draft regulator? I find they really help in that kind of weather.
