Hey Travis, The term "batch" or "batch box" on this forum is typically used to describe a specific type of heater that is a variation of the rocket mass heater. Basically it is a rocket mass heater variation(s) that has a smallish burn box instead of the classic vertical feed tube. The design works well and helps solve the problem of constantly feeding a rocket mass heater feed tube which is time consuming. They have become very popular. There are many experts on here that have perfected the design to many applications. Logic would dictate the term could be used to describe any heater that has a "box" that you would burn a "batch" of wood in but that is not the case with the rocket mass heater community. I found out the hard way when I first started posting here. I was damaged emotionally for many months but decided to stick around anyway...lol (End PSA) With that said, I think you might be interested in vortex's or matt walkers brick heaters that might scale down in size. They have heat trapping features that help maximize efficiency vs just a simple box with a pipe. If you just built a simple box with a chimney that was brick I would be afraid to much heat would go out the chimney. Stick around and do lots of reading. Make notes of what your goals are with the heater as you read and I bet you will find a design that works for your needs. Allot depends on budget, skill level, rent own ...etc...But research first so you don't build twice. Check out the DSR mark II thread by peter. Like others on here, he does allot of perfecting on his designs and provides bullet proof designs plans for free! It is a really nice compact vertical heater that burns very clean. I really like the vertical design. double-shoebox-rocket-mark-iiFor me, I experiment with my own designs because that is what I love to do.

I have poked around this forum, and on permies, since I first posted and did indeed learn what is generally meant as a batch box around here. Thanks for giving me a couple places to check out. I took a workshop on RMH from the Wisner's, but that was several years ago and I never did build one. I couldn't pass up a deal on a small house in the woods, but it was built on posts. Until I figure out a way to shore up under the house, I will need to build a little lighter. Thanks again, sir.
