Keep it simple. If you want to instantly create the double-vortex, make the heat riser heart-shaped. I did it accidentally by using a 6-inch steel duct inside the heat riser on the first PBB I built. When the flame got into the riser the steel expanded and forced the seam inward, which happened to be opposite of the port. This shape shouldn't be difficult with casting. Walkers core doesn't use insulation, does it? Are you just trying something out? Wrong. The entire core is made out of insulated fire bricks, and it doesn't work without it being highly insulated, according to Matt.

So far it has just been by making a crack in the brickwork above the slot so that fresh air can come in. Crude, I know, but that's what I've been able to do so far. I have a couple of ideas for channels that I plan to try this fall/winter when I am able to get back to it.

I don't think it's really visible, and I've torn down that prototype, so I can't take any more images. I just pulled the bricks apart a bit until it burned well for the sake of rough testing to see if the vortex would form. No Testo data or anything fancy like that available here other than the good old sniff test, which it passed just fine.

Life tends to give me time to experiment in fits and spurts. After reviewing what's been going on since I've been distracted by other things, I'm opening a new thread to track continued development of what I hope will be the core that ultimately replaces the box stove I am currently using. Sorry about that. When G+ went under it took my pics with it. I have copies of most of them and was able to reclaim a lot of them (all the pics on this thread are reclaimed / re-posted). Life got busy and I've been unable to spend time on this hobby recently, unfortunately. Hopefully I'll get back to it at some point.

One day someone with the means will work all this out in fluid dynamics simulators or something and come up with the near perfect core concept. Reminds me of the Dragon Heater, just in terms of shaping the core to cause things to happen a certain way.

I tried to Mesh the Vortex core in Fluent and OpenFoam but.. I'm too short for that :-(. I had only time limited access to the Fluent software and.. I saw no deeper sense in spending months on learning how to conduct proper simulation. Soon the new version of the soft will allow for much easier mesh changing which will make programming of non steady state environment much faster.
