Hi All; Anybody following permies has seen these pictures, but thought I would post a few here as well, and ask advice about an idea. I'm thinking of wrapping the barrel with fiberglass tape after the initial layer of cob is on and before I put the color coat on ? Each year so far by spring my cob is cracked and wanting to pull away from the barrel, I'm hoping this wrap will keep it all tight. Has this been done by anybody ? This is my third and I think best build yet,(practice makes perfect) 8" J tube with a 16" feed tube , 12" burn tunnel roof and a 51" riser. An early unplanned burn showed +800 on the barrel top with a cold wet core and a sopping wet riser. Thank's Tom

i used mess tape for strength in my toy rocket core outside and it seemed to help a lot. set outside for 2 years and was just fine. a tree limb smashed it this spring so i tore it apart to rebuild bigger and better. lol i figured it would be a pain to get the mess out but it wasnt at all. crush the chunks and pull out the mesh easy as that. it had a different look to it after being subjected to the heat. it was a silvery shinny color instead of the original white. i cant see any drawbacks to it myself.

Well went to the H.D. store yesterday looking for fiberglass mesh tape ... what i got sold was "fiber tape" ... got it home, opened it up and thought well if it's fiberglass it won't burn ... yup it burned ... so now since its here i'm wondering , will it get so hot that the plastic off gasses ? Melts ? buried in cob ? External temp on the surface of the cob on the lower barrel should be below 200F most of the time Should I be concerned ? There is fiberglass thread that didn't burn so the strength should still be there if it melted. Anybody used this stuff before ? Is this what you used mudder ?

update on mesh tape. i put a piece in the fire the other night and it didnt burn. i assume its plenty tough to be trusted in the cob.

Thanks for the update mudder. The mesh that I got did burn, but I decided to try it anyway. I can always pull the cob off if we start smelling plastic. I only used it on the lower half of the barrel so i'm hoping the temps are low enough not to off gas. I really liked how it wrapped the cob nice and tight to the barrel. Cobbing progresses slowly. Will start the color process soon. Attachments:

i see you cob up the barrel sided. is that to help send more heat to the bench?

Yes , the building is a greenhouse/ artist studio and we keep it heated all winter so more mass is better than quick radiant heat. Attachments:

So I discovered a new trick this afternoon... working on the vertical cob, thinking ahead about the coloring process. last year I mixed up a batch of cob with red & black concrete coloring , worked good looked good . today i'm working with wet cob ,looking ahead and thinking, that area ahead may be done already , no need to add more wet cob there,To bad i will have to when I color.. (light bulb illuminates) I already have cob on the barrel and its dry .. hmm.. I wonder what happens if I just mix up some red & black color in a shallow pan ,add some water and stir... turns out you can dip a rag or brush and PAINT your cob (who would have thought ) This means you could paint a scene on your barrel ! If you're a good artist this could be a way to make that ugly barrel really unique! The artist in my life informed me that no way was she painting that barrel.. I seem to tear it apart every spring...details... Well i'm no artist but... I may try , why not I can always rub it off if it comes out crappy. If my mesh wrap works thru next winter and the cob is in good shape AND if I can avoid rebuilding maybe I can talk her into painting on it next summer.

Love it. Seems obvious in retrospect. Changes the equation with regard to aesthetics. Thanks for sharing!

Ok; Haven't started coloring yet, but I have been learning about pigments. Seems there is a myriad of colors that can be "painted" directly on cob. Most all are heat stable to over 340 F . The issues are the binder or sealer will not hold at higher temps. Without a binder / sealer coat, your painted cob will "dust off" over time and need to be reapplied, not a big problem for me as I seem to rebuild every spring! . I have not been able to test yet but I was told that near 200 F shellac mixed with pigment will start to varragate and change colors, (could be a cool effect). The pigment /shellac mix won't dust off with the binder, and should last quite a while on the lower part of the barrel but not past 1/2 way up. I found a great website that sells all natural pigments with an outstanding range of colors. www.earthpigments.com/ I currently have a mayan green and mayan royal blue that I purchased from them and I have red & black concrete pigments from H.D. I may get some white as well, either a white pigment or a lime wash, as I may want a "white canvas" for my colors to be correct. The big question for me is WHAT DO I PAINT ? A scene ? a color pattern ? Not being an artist maybe I should do caveman stick figures and hand prints ? lol Other projects, like my troy-bilt tillers transmission seizing up ,gardening, fire wooding and oh yea work are getting in my way of playing and every day I do other things it gets warmer & warmer and I won't be allowed to fire the dragon soon...
