So, is there a reason why the secondary air in this setup must be supplied underneath the firebox through a metal duct, rather than over the top outside the firebox, just like the p-channel? Would that fail ti achieve adequate pre-heating?

Would that fail ti achieve adequate pre-heating? Yes. Moreover, the capacity of the p-channel is limited. When getting hot, it will progressively draw less air. The s-portal is just the other way around, hotter means more air. The s-portal brings the possibility to minimize the primary air. The same goes for Matt's pre-port channel by the way.

Have the S-Portal dimensions been finalized?

pinhead, As far as I'm aware of the dimensions are finalized now. Sjang van Daal has planned to publish the results sometime during this spring or coming summer, most likely through this thread. I hope he would also release the proper dimensions on that occasion.

Peter, Thanks for referring me to Matt's pre-port channel. I haven't had time just yet to read all the way through that thread, but it looks promising, and easier to fabricate and replace than the S-portal. Somehow I hadn't seen it yet.

Very interesting!! Did Sjang van Daal publish his dimensions yet? Where could I find these? Thanks!

Sjang choosed not to publish things, keeping his cards close to his chest. Also, his secundary air system need to be made out of SS 310 in order to survive. Which is a quite costly material. He won't sell this thing separately as far as I am aware of. So this is a closed source addition to an open source concept.

That's too bad.
The mild steel S-portal that I included in my firebox is showing only slight scaling/damage after almost a year of use on the firebox side. I haven't removed the barrel to look down the heat riser, though, to see what it looks like on the "hot" side; the stove has worked so well I haven't wanted to disturb anything.

Ok. Would it be possible to make a secondary air inlet out of perlite clay cast? Maybe just make it out of metal, cast perlite clay around it, and just let the fire do to the metal whatever it wants...?

Has anyone made P-ports or S-ports out of fired porcelain?
