No Bernard, this grid won't work. I've tried that too and the fire has the tendency to burn down a bit. The output, however, happened to be quite dirty and varied a lot. Probably caused by the unpredictable under air as GJH42 already mentioned. This batch box design is a horizontal firebox with a distinctive after burner. Anything that impaires the airflow through the port will cause the combustion to turn to incomplete rather quickly.
And I mean anything, whatever I've thrown at it which happened to be quite a lot of ways, always made the combustion less complete. Of course there are exceptions like the air system of Sjang van Daal or Matt Walker. Both are different but following the same rules.

I was tinkering tubes to test the system of Matt drill a hole larger than regular drills is not easy.

Bernard, I used what's called a "hole saw" here to make the circular opening in the rectangular stock, where I mated the 2" tubing for the vertical. Is that the part you are struggling with? I used an angle grinder to make the slot in the vertical tubing.

Those ones you are using are for wood. They do make hole saws with abrasive carbide teeth but they are expensive and like high speed drills...

Wolf, at least with Milwaukee brand the Bi-Metal ones are made for steel. Not as quick as the carbide ones, but much cheaper. Still not cheap.
