Okay you guys, I figure it's about time I show you what I've been working on. This really all started over a year ago, and then when I threw this idea out there for the Design Challenge, and it was selected as a finalist, I committed to seeing it through. I have no idea really where this is going, I can't really build them in any sort of large numbers, but I wanted to get the concept out there, so here it is in website form. P.S. Probably the most interesting thing for this group is the risers. I have sourced some pretty dang cool ceramic fiber risers that perform amazingly. They are pretty spendy, like $150 for a 6" x 24" section, but they are pretty cool. walkerstoves.com/

Nice Matt, I am curious about the risers. Is that $150 your cost or what you will be selling them for? Any idea of weight? I have at least two heater projects I need to do come the first of the year.

Thanks Tobit. They weigh around 10 pounds or so. I'm guessing, I haven't weighed one, but they're light weight. $150 + shipping gets you one.

I just got a Pm from a member who has been helpful to me in the past, with a question regarding the build on these. I wanted to let you guys know that if you have any questions at all about the build, I'm happy to share any information I can. I think most of us are gonna be more interested in almost free mud stoves, and these are definitely not intended for us. But, if anyone wants to build something like this, I'm happy to help.

What would be the height required for a 55G barrel?

I have had good results using these 24" sections as is in a 55 gallon barrel. On top of a 14" high riser stub on a cast core, that gives you 38" of overall riser height. It's a hair short by the old accepted standards, but it seems to work fantastic. I don't have testing equipment like Peter, so I don't know if it's slightly less efficient than it could be if it were a few inches taller, but from all appearances it is comparable to the higher but denser home made masonry riser in performance, even at the slightly shorter height. I've also extended them and used all 31" of available space in a full size barrel, and I didn't notice an improvement, so I tend to run them at 24".

I'm definitely going to have to order one of these risers but I am leaving for my land shortly and will not be able to until November.

Good luck with this Matt - great to see your finished stove. You've stuck with the Pisla door. I'm guessing the shutter on the lower door gives enough air flow.

Good luck with this Matt - great to see your finished stove. You've stuck with the Pisla door. I'm guessing the shutter on the lower door gives enough air flow. It doesn't actually. When the door is closed all the way it's not enough air. For my personal use I just leave that bottom door open a crack, it has a couple settings on the catch for exactly that. For the challenge I'm modifying it a bit so they can't shut it down too much. Thanks a lot for the support Morticcio, it means a lot to me.
