I have found a product that I can get local called Thermafiber board, it is a type of mineral wool ridgid board that can withstand temperatures of 1900 degrees F. thermafiber board.
I think that this would be a good alternative to the vermiculite board for a riser but it would be pushed to its temperature limits and may breakdown but the costs makes me want to try it. Any thoughts or input? Dave

any comments from anyone about this product? Just got an e-mail from the refractory shop saying that they use it instead of vermiculit board (seems much cheaper also) and that it would hold up for my project. Thinking of using fire brick/blocks for the burn tube, burn tunnel sides and bottom and this product to span the top of the burn tunnel and then also for the riser.

Dave, I have no experience with that product, but I'll give you an opinion anyway since no one has responded. I think that the rating of that product is too low for long term use as the tunnel top, but there's really only one way to find out. It's rating is probably pretty close to the temps it's going to see sustained in there, with peaks over that number almost certainly. How it fails at that point is the question though.

Dave, I'm a newbie and am enticed by the simplicity (and perhaps the appropriateness) of using a thermoboard for the riser.
Did you follow through on your tests? How did it go?

life has happened and nothing got done on the rocket. Hopefully this winter it will happen and I'll be sure to post the results.
