can you make a rocket stove out of a regular wood burning stove by just pipe the gas exhaust in the seating or inbedded piping.
Has any one done this and what are the pit falls and plus if any?

epssty, Welcome to the boards. And no, a regular wood stove coupled to a bench or whatever won't make a rocket stove, at all. The clean burning properties of a rocket mass heater are achieved in its combustion unit, so you have to build a complete new stove in order to obtain the same. What you could do in case the exhaust gases are too hot from your existing stove: place a 16 gallons barrel at the side or behind and route the exhaust gases through it. When the gases enter the barrel at bottom level and the exit too, you've got a bell style heat exchanger behind your stove. See the picture, it's entirely correct when done exactly like this. Could be done using one drum also, same principle.
