Hi everybody. Question about the suitability of plasterboard for a bell? Well, there's a guy on permies who has a hearth and chimney www.permies.com/t/26491/rocket-stoves/Rocket-masonry-heater-guessI was thinking, if it's big as the french "cantou" hearth, he could simply shutter between front and back of the hearth's chimney to form a bell with plasterboard. Well, just an idea floating in my head.

The plasterboard that I'm thinking of is made from gypsum and covered in paper so the paper surface would obviously rule this out and the gypsum turns into hemi-hydrate at 150-165 degrees C so it would break down at anything around this mark. Given that the first bell is likely to to be getting much hotter than this I would say it is a none starter.
Over here in the UK you can get concrete panels for shower areas which might be more of a likely candidate if you were to cover them in metal lath and render over them to seal any joints and give more mass but you would still need to fix them to something non combustible like angle iron or something. It all sounds a bit dodgy though not just with fire risks but also carbon monoxide etc. Its always worth sticking to building regs/codes unless you really know what your doing since they are not there just to make life difficult for inventive souls. Plasterboard would be disallowed under any regs that I'm aware of.
Cheers,
Martin.

Hi Martin.
Thanks for the reply.
I thought i had read somewhere that plaster was somehow heat resistant. No way then. I wonder about the way fermacel powerpannel would hold.

guess the only way would be to get a scrap and throw it on a fire or on top of a stove and see how it fairs. Also the question is how much easier it would be than say lowering the lintel and building the bell in brickwork into the chimney cavity?

You can get fire rated plaster board , its used in areas of hospitals nursing homes etc. Its used as a barrier to slow down fires into zones , Not sure on its rating but its a tested rated product so the info will be out there on the WWW .
