Lava rocks and grate, from a shoping troley partition. I know i'll have to clean the zinc plating.

Testing. So, it takes longer than the other core of this type i've made. The one with the round pipe; to heat up. But once it's hot, whouhouh! Flames shoot out from underneath of the cast iron plate. The cast iron plate is aproximately the same size as the grate. And i even have one with rings in it Next step, cuting the extra lengh of the batch box, i'm not too keen on it sticking out that much and the bottom V is only 40cm long. Then find a ring or hoop to atach the two parts together. And after, buying a big refractory plate, and make a black oven for pizza, and may be other things. What would you think i should use for the oven? Mass? Insulation? Both? I was thinking of a cut barrel. And ataching it with the hoop too.

Well, still weights a good 80 kilos i guess. But lighter than the previous one, and cooks faster on the cast iron plate.

I'd go mass with an insulation layer over that.

That's a high powered BBQ right there.

Thanks for the comment guys.
Donkey, the problem with mass is that it defeats the portability. I'm envisioning a white oven on legs, i mean, make a metal cupboard which would act as a bell, with some refractory pavers and a dome built on top of this. Insulated dome that is. Then i would just have tu push the rocket barrel barbie core thingy in it. Tho, i don't know how long it would take to heat up. I might just try a barrel cut at first. one pizza oven 50x50 paver in it, refractory bricks on the perimeter, and just insulation on top.

So guys. I've tried the barbie with lava rocks. Cooks lovely at the back, but barely heats up at the front. Seems normal since the heat riser isn't centered. I thought i would have to raise the grid much, but a 5cm gap above the lava rocks is even big i think. Then, i've cut a refractory plate 50x50x5cm into an octagon, raised it 5cm above the heat riser, and covered that with a piece of a barrel, with a horizontal cutout equal to the csa on the front. It didn't burn the paint, and the piece of barrel is loosing too much heat i think. I will give it another try without the refractory plate, to see if i can burn the paint off.
If anybody has an idea on a type of insulation i could fit around this. That would be welcome. Remember, it needs to be portable. Best idea i have, is rockwool with chickenwire. But that's not too neat! I can't make a smaller container inside the barrel, as i have a sort of barrel gap between the refractory plate and barrel side. So it has to go on the outside. Pics to follow.

Thanks a lot for your reply Donkey.
Well, doing steel roofing often, i have plenty of flat steel offcuts. I will make a box to hold the rockwool. (like a hat box) Only problem, the time it takes. I'm busy right now. And i have another project on the go!

I'm busy right now. And i have another project on the go! What ever became of this Max? Well, it's below my stairs. Used it a few times. The box is a smidge big for the heat riser. And not insulated at the front. So it smokes too much for my taste. There's about 3m of snow all around, so no testing for the moment.
