I am hoping to build a greenhouse with a RMS to keep my soil beds warm enough to grow kale in the winter. Our soil structure is stony loam over hardpan. My question is, can I use this hardpan in place of clay in building the cob? In its natural state it is something that is dug with a pick axe rather than a shovel and is impervious to water. Any guess?

Hardpan is compacted soil. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HardpanHardpan could be compacted clay soil or something else. The chance is quite high for clay. Test it.

Thanks Karl. I will test it but I will probably tale my pickup to a part of the state famous for clay and pick up some there.
