My current stove has the firebox roof at about 450mm (18") above floor level.
Given it's necessary to load the firebox nearly to the top, and set a top-lit fire, having it this low makes it hard to use with out straining my neck.
Is there an ideal height for loading a firebox?
I also have to bear in mind that the higher the firebox, the shorter the insulated part of my flue becomes.

Best heigth of firebox' ceiling in my case is about 100 cm (3.3'). Just enough while sitting in front of the thing on a lowish stool so I am able to look straight into the firebox. But then, I am certainly not the tallest guy on the block so it depends greatly on your size, I'd say.
That last sentence isn't very clear, do you mean the flue comes out of the top of the planned heater?

The insulated flue runs through the mass, from the bottom and then out of the top, and then there is a further insulated section rising up from the top of the mass, then a 45 degree bend into an existing uninsulated chimney. I was thinking that the higher I raise the whole stove, the shorter will be the insulated part of the flue.

I forget to say the stove is based on Trev's vortex stove: sketchup

I'm afraid that a vortex stove is essentially quite low, it's the size of a stout kitchen range. Best to ask Trevor what he'd think about it.

Hi Karl, The firebox roof of my Vortex stove is 2' / 610mm above the floor level. I have a black sheepskin rug infront the fire that I kneel on when loading it. I don't find it at all difficult, feels quite natural.
The core can be built at whatever height you like, but I find the higher the firebox the more you tend to get cold floors especially in old buildings that are not well draft proofed and well insulated.
You could make the core higher and run bottom flue channels under the ashbox but the more contraflow you have the better the flue ideally needs to be.

An 8"/200mm batch rocket: ceiling at 4'/125cm, bottom at 2.4'/72cm, facing our dining table. Nice to see the fire while eating. Warms up very well.
The space below is also useful to store wood.
