I bought an old house which still has approx two-three tons of furnace coal in the basement. I want to build a mass heater to burn the coal if I can to to heat the old house- approx 1000 sq ft on each level - two levels above the basement. I am somewhat knowledgeable of the batch heaters/ mass heaters built by Peter in Germany- although still cannot figure out how to use sketchup - frown. I do have the excel spreadsheet data. are there some good pictures of builds around the forums? My coal is around 3/4 inch made for an old auger fed / air- boosted furnace. Maybe some of the old Russian mass heaters used coal?
I foresee coal as a fuel making a comeback in the Western USA, it is still in use in some places, and new coal burning furnaces are still sold.
Many thanks to all the posters who make this board a Godsend. I have built one small rocket heater for a greenhouse which I must rebuild. but learning. thanks again, to all.

It is my understanding that coal is too fuel rich for standard RMH designs, so if it were me, I might build a batch box RMH and then just put a little coal in there with each load of wood. Might take you a couple years to get through it, but it could be done.
I wonder why you foresee coal making a comeback? We really need to leave it in the ground. It has tons of heavy metals not to mention it's not a renewable fuel and has a heavy greenhouse gas footprint.
