We have had a rocket for a few years now, but we need to rebuild it. There is no way to have a heated bench in our situation, but the performance as a stove has surpassed a more common box stove, so we want to keep it. But it would be nice to give the barrel a chance to release more of the heat into the space and less to the outside.
So I was thinking about welding on a series of vertical fins around the barrel.
Anybody think it would work? Would it be a fools errand?
Also: does anybody have a link to a more contemporary looking RMH? My wife loves the stove...hates the look.
Thanks.

It doesn't HAVE to be a barrel. Any container than can handle the heat will do, as long as it's got enough volume (no bottle-necks). It would probably heat better if the barrel (container, etc.) were greatly over-sized. Think bell.
Otherwise, maybe fins will help.. Dunno.

Fins, a fan, anything to exchange the heat faster would work. Personally I used a 55gallon drum with tubes going through it as a heat exchanger for my shop and I couldnt ask for more. I have a regular stove on now though, but am currently building a rocket to replace it.
The sell similar type heat exchangers at tractor supply but they are easy to build.
