Several yrs ago when I started building on the new property I did research on rocket heater. Decided I wanted one and finally have had a couple weeks of reading and researching every night. This is for a 3000sq ft shop in a mild climate. Building is well insulated and spend last yr in it so it doesn’t get near as cold as guys up north. I’ve decided on a open batch shoe. Bear with me on all the names and abbreviations. I’m going to post pics as I build so y’all can tell me good job or if I should change something. I’m big boy and criticism is not going to hurt my feelings. I’m either going with a 6-7” inside a 250 gal propane tank that’s 3/8 thick. The numbers do not work out for the bell but I plan to make the box a bolt in so it can be swapped out. I have most of the fabrication of the metal worked out in my head within reason. The part I don’t have figured out is the metal around the box because I’ve never used firebrick and the insulation/ boards sizes. Once those are in hand it should flow along. So today I dug the tank out and put it on rollers. www.dropbox.com/s/qfygc4lc825bv32/Photo%20Nov%2026%2C%202%2053%2057%20PM.jpg?dl=0www.dropbox.com/s/jdx6q4o4z66ntof/Photo%20Nov%2026%2C%202%2054%2008%20PM.jpg?dl=0

Well andy, I'm curious as to how your project is going. I've been away for some time but I'm back now. You'll find that this site is very slow at times, meaning folks are not commenting much. They view things quite a bit, and because your project is certianly out of the norm folks will not know how to give advise.
One thing I don't understand from your posts: Are you building the firebox from steel and then lining it with firebrick? Second, it the tank then going to be the bell and the firebox contained inside the footprint of the tank? A sketch of the entire device would be helpful. I used to use sketchup when it was free, but now I'd just have to freehand it on a piece of paper and take a picture of it with my phone to post.
Anyway, I'll follow your progress. Please don't give up posting on your progress.
Duane
