So once again I'm rebuilding my stove. It is an 8 inch batch with floor channel and a black oven. Here is a link to photos of it in progress. The riser goes from square to rectangular as it approaches the floor of the oven to give more space to the oven floor. There is a curb around the riser on the oven floor to decrease the likelihood of the gases short circuiting directly to the exit in the oven's lower side wall. The gas flow path out the oven and into the bell is a bit tighter than I would like. Hopefully it will work as intended. If not I may have to remove the roof and pull the oven out altogether. I have included an 80% shutdown damper in the chimney to hopefully reduce heat loss out the chimney after the stove is down to coals. I should finish this tonight or tomorrow and will let you know how it went. I should add that the bell exit runs underneath the firebox and into the narrow rectangle on the left side of the firebox. This over a few courses becomes the 8x8 square you see in that corner. Well it is done. Still cooking off the last of the moisture. I may need to do a partial tear down and move the bypass higher in the stove. Been having trouble with cold starts but that may improve with a dryer stove. The bypass is currently about 1/3 of the way from the top. Typically I put the bypass as high as possible but thought I would follow the advice of others on this forum and move it down to 1/3. The oven is going up to about 700F according to the totally inaccurate wood stove magnet thermometer I have attached to oven door. I think baking will have to take place after the fire has died down. Hopefully the temp won't drop to quickly during coaling. Hope I got the images inserts right. I usually screw that up so let me know! thanks Joseph

Well it turns out it was just way to tight in there with the oven. Not enough headroom over the riser and to little gas movement space out of the side of the oven. It was getting cold so I took the oven out and moved the bypass up to the top. Now it works great but still can't bake bagels which I really enjoy.
Perhaps I will try baking in the firebox as I think Orange suggested a ways back. If I had higher ceilings I think I could have made it work with a taller oven. I was reading a masonry heater book recently and it pointed out the obvious fact that the gases expand in the firebox and then shrink as they cool so thats why the riser exit needs so much space. But the bell exit can be system size. Hope this helps someone trying a similar thing. Happy winter to everyone in this hemisphere

Baked my first firebox loaf today. The fire was down to about half way between the heavy and minimal coal stage after a full burn. I threw a brick in with a steel plate on top to raise it out of the coals. Waited until I could hold my hand in the firebox for a 10 second count then slid the loaf pan in. It baked a little faster than I would have liked with a overly moist crumb but all in all it's good bread. Now I just need to make a long skinny pan for bagels!
