Hello Brian, First best wishes for ease of journey to health for you both. I understand if it will be a while before any reply. It looks to me, from the pic of the upper box floor, as if you implemented the version I asked Peter about in this post but his relpy was negative on the idea. I'd love to hear how you are finding its burn when you get there. That looks to be similar to my build. Regarding what, in particular, did Peter reply negatively? There certainly may be new developments of which I am unaware.

If you read on down that thread you will hear it in his words and see it in my drawings. In a nut shell: the upper box should make combustion more complete if it is smooth inside (at least more like be the best he tested), not have the rim around the upper section of the port. I don't know if he would have tested it but it makes sense that it changes the gas-flow pattern in the top box. You will see that I had another idea before he 'approved' the drawings I posted in the thread, to put the rim under the separator between the two boxes, if we can work out a way to get that rim to stay (not be knocked off by firewood loading) it will be cheaper than having double/2" thickness separator. And it came up in another thread that there were issues with unburned hydrocarbons while developing the BBR (hence the height of the port with wall coming down from the FB roof), I suggested that there may be hydrocarbons making a problem in the DSR burn too, but had no reply about it. If this rim were underneath the separator it would, potentially at least, hold some of the unburned hydrocarbons back from going through the port. I don't know if 1"/25mm would make any difference in this regard as the BBR has 86mm/(more than 3") 'rim' but it may make some difference. I don't however know enough on the subject and don't have a testo.

I'd love to hear how you are finding its burn when you get there. Based on what you’ve said here that Peter recommended, when (if?!) I finally get back to experimenting with this, I’ll place the “collar” around the port on the firebox side and keep it in place with a combination of ceramic cement and corse thread Torx screws with fender washers, hand tightened only, to reinforce the ceramic cement. I’ll cover the screw head/ fender washer with a thick layer of the ceramic cement. This is a good combination that I’ve already used for constructing the ceramic board shapes but I’ve been away from home for 9 weeks now keeping an eye on my mom’s care. She was in the hospital for 3 1/2 weeks then a long term acute care (“step down”) hospital, then several weeks at a rehab facility. We’re finally bringing her to my sister’s home tomorrow but I have no idea when or if we’ll get her back to my old homestead where I have my workshop and unfinished projects indefinitely on hold. She’s a tough lady - 82 years old and survived a quintuple bypass and aortic valve replacement.
