1. With the design of having the exit flue pass back by the riser barrel, would it be a good idea to have the metal-door cheater box have a little (4"?) pit to catch any ash that may have made it all the way there?
2. for an 8" system, is installing a big pipe vent important or can you just crack a window?

Thank you 1. I would put the pit in there if it wasn't a hassle. 2. Depends how tight your place is and how good you are about cracking windows when it is cold out. If you have an airtight vapor barier house I would put in the vent. If it is an old leaky farmhouse no worries.
