Hey all, i'm going to build a rocket mass heater and have access to many old concrete blocks, the 8"x15" type with an 11" hole in the middle. I am thinking of feeding the 10"exhaust pipe through these and then cobbing the remaining to make my bench. Any ideas on if this might not be a good idea? thanks, sjm

I'm just starting on my 1st rocket stove for the winter myself. I can't give you much advice on what your thinking of doing but as no one else seems to be responding lately, I can say start with Ianto's book. If you go through all the posts on this forum you will find that many questions and situations have already been answered. A biggie that I will be doing and that makes alot of sense to me is to build the 'skeleton' of the stove on a flat surface BEFORE you build it in it's final resting place. Give that a shot and then post to let us/me know how it goes. Best of luck!

I think the blocks can work fine for you but there is one thing that comes to mind. My experience has shown that you don't effectively harvest the heat into your mass unless it is solidly fused to it. So, you must be very diligent about packing clay/sand mortar all around between your sleeve stack and the blocks to make them one. Then cobbing around the blocks and making them one with the rest is easy but packing the insides will be a bit of work.
