So I am just wondering what kind of cushions or covers people have been using for their mass benches? I have been using a thin wool blanket and a down comforter for varying the insulation level on the bench to keep heat in when wanted and cushion use. I am thinking that a wool pad of some sort would be nice. Anyone?

Along those lines, I'm hoping to make a straw mattress for my bed and possibly straw cushions (maybe not) but I'm worried they'd insulate TOO well and my bed wouldn't be warm. What about a futon?

I've got an old pillow for my bench.. I've gotten it too hot before and the synthetic fibers in the pillow melted slightly. Oops! Gotta watch for that.

Should I be worried about straw igniting?
Okay, better question. How far is the heat from the surface of the bench, and how far from the stove is that point? I assume I can easily avoid burning things by controlling how much heat gets there.

I assume I can easily avoid burning things by controlling how much heat gets there. It all depends on how YOU build it.. Thinner stuff on the bench between the pipes and your bum gets the heat there faster but will store less for the long run. The pipe in my bench should have been a little further down.. Also, the event in question, I let the fire go for too long, kept feeding it beyond the smart cut off time, forgot and left the pillow on.
