I've never been successful lighting the batch box from the front; the flame path is entirely too long to sufficiently heat the riser which promptly overloads with woodgas/smoke.
The heat riser should ALWAYS be the hottest part of the stove. Getting as much heat into the riser as possible is the recipe for a smoke-free burn. I generally light a small pile of sticks/twigs/splits at the base of the port, making sure to position them so the flame can reach into the riser. Generally once the hand-full or so of sticks has been burned, the riser is sufficiently pre-heated enough to support a load - again, lit at the base of the port.
I've not been successful lighting the top of the fuel close to the port as Peter suggests; in my experience, this allows the local flame path/draft to rise above the port and thus out the front of the door (on a cold stove).

I don't think the riser is getting hot enough, but I have no proof.
