hello,
I just found out this forum and it's great! I'm wondering how a rocket stove compare to a traditional masonry heater. Can the same efficiency be achieved?
I'm also trying to find a way to SEE the fire in a rocket stove. I looked at all the older post and it seems only 2 person done that, I'm wondering why it's not popular. For me, it's one of the most important thing... I looked online and found out that you can buy special woodstove glass and it's not to expensive ( when compared to a 10K masonry heater).
thanks
Alexis

I call the rocket mass heater(RMH) the poor man's masonry heater. But, you don't have to be poor (or a man) to have one! RMHs are favorable in terms of price and they can be as or even more efficient (or less if you screw up of course) as a traditional masonry heater. Unless you build a rocket bell however, they take more fiddling with the fire as it is not a batch burn like a traditional. Seeing the fire is very popular on the wish lists but it is an complication and cost. I think we'll see more windows eventually.

I was looking at the price for ceramic clear glass just Thursday. An 8"x10" piece would cost $35. It was 3/16ths thick. If I understand the spec. right it should be good to use for a window. Bed that in the woven gasket to space it from the top and bottom to allow for any expansion. Might work? I'm slowly looking for a window from a gas grill to see if I can use that first. May not be the right size but I can fudge with it and not be out the bucks if it's to fragile or wont take the heat. If it seems to work I'll try to cut it more to size.

Some have tried a Pyrex baking dish. I think with good results. (?)

I saw the youtube video of one using a Pyrex pan. He stated that so far it's been burning nicely with no problem. I was thinking the shape of the pan might be harder to bury in the cob. The guy on youtube also said that he had not had any really blazing hot burns yet. I'll see what happens as spring comes. If I find a used pyrex pan or decide to bite the bullet and buy the glass.
