If red bricks, fire bricks and homemade bricks all fail for the burn tunnel roof, has anyone tried soapstone, or another stone that withstands high temperatures? Brick sized pieces might crack, but smaller pieces maybe? Soapstone is non reactive too, they use it in spiffy chemistry labs. Or hell, what about 1/2" steel plates (with some insulation on top of them? Like the idea of making as durable a stove as I can...

Hi przybyla, welcome to the boards. I don't know whether soapstone would hold or not. But please, don't use steel in a rocket core, it will burn out inevitably. It won't melt but due to high temperatures, oxygen-rich and low carbon environment the steel will oxydize very rapidly. The result is dull-grey flakes are falling off after every burn. Even stainless steel won't hold for more than a season.

It is my experience that fire bricks do not fail for a burn tunnel roof.
