Has anyone tried coating the inside of their riser with ITC-100? It is supposedly a highly reflective ceramic paint that is used to increase the temperature, efficiency, and durability of kilns.

But it is so damn expensive. In my kiln I have used the standard bat wash to paint the inside of the walls to keep the them nice and white and reflective. It has held up well but I have no evidence that it improves efficiency but it's cheap and makes me feel better.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm planning on fabricating my 8" octagonal riser out of ceramic fiber boards. Coating the inner surfaces before assembly should be fairly straightforward. The coating has several benefits; it dramatically reduces the possibility of "shedding fibers", it creates a smoother surface for lower frictional losses, it is highly reflective and thus substantially reduces radiant heat loss.

The secret ingredient seems to be Zirconium dioxide. If you can get your hands on it... ;-)
