Has anyone experimented with making the opening in the stove larger than Ianto and others recommend? My stove is based off the 8" model and so has an 8" opening. It sure would be nice to change it to 8x12 or 8x16 in order to put in more and larger pieces of wood. I'm sure I could give it a shot but since it's in my house now it seems more dangerous to experiment. So has anyone tried this? I assume that the amount of draft has an effect on how far the smoke will pull in.
thanks
Joseph

Yeah, I've done it.. The air comes in from all around instead of a narrow, directed flow. This almost always causes smoke back. If a lid with an appropriately sized hole is placed over the box, it won't smoke into the room but the box will fill up with smoke and it will puff out when you open the lid to feed in more or poke the fire.
As good as it is, the J-tube arrangement is almost impossible to make bigger.
