Hi All I'm new here and like what Ive read so far.Ready to start experimenting. I scored some 8" asbestos cement flue liner tearing out an old chimney from a house demolition. I think it would make a good burn tunnel but unsure about using it also as the heat riser. It is 1/2" thick What do you guys think?

Asbestos is something you don't want to breathe in. It's microscopic fibers penetrate deep into the lungs and can cause disease many years down the road. I would avoid using it, if possible.

Please don't use the asbestos cement pipe as a burn tunnel or heatriser. The asbestos can handle high temperatures, the cement can't. It's easy to let the material sort of explode with a soldering torch. In the burn tunnel the material will desintegrate quickly, the fibers will come into the outside air. Very dangerous in the long run!

rocket_richard and peterberg
Thank you guys for the heads up on not using asbestos. That 8" pipe did look inviting and the price was right but way too dangerous.
I have been researching making a castable refractory using fireclay and perlite.
Anyone have any tried and true recipes?

Hey Donkey
I knew that cutting the pipe would be a hazard but failed to realize it could explode from direct flame.Yikes, indeed!
Your apology unnecessary. That 's what a good forum is about, finding out info from perspectives un-thought about but then revealed.
