Hi All, I'm about to build me my first RMH! Bought the book from Ianto Evans and the 6'' plan from the Wisners and decided on a corner bench since the room is pretty small. So now i'm looking for materials and that turns out to be a bit of a problem. A lot of (mostly american) stories i read mention ' building a RMH from scrapyard material, for relative little money' in one way or the other but that seems to be a problem over here: - firebrick is very hard to come by second hand and still pretty expensive, 1- 1,5 euro per brick ( about 2 euro each new) - To my surprise (and sjacherin) I have not been able to find any second hand ducting (6'' or 15 cm) anywhere though i'm sure houses get broken down and stuff reused here as well.. there's metal buyers who have uge piles of all sorts of metal and yes, i am welcome to come and crawl through it to see if there's any ducting there. I haven't tried that yet coz it seems not very hopefull but i'll keep it as a last resort. - also, what should i get? galvanized tubes used for cold air are for sale (new) for prices i can afford but i read the RMH gets to hot and the zink wil transfer in some poisonous gas.. RVS tubes are a lot more expensive, i found only one supplier who has not 15cm but 16 cm diameter, and i don't know if this is a problem.. I was wondering if there are any dutch people here and what their solutions have been to these problems. Ofcourse any non-dutch help is very much appreciated too

For any ducting post-barrel, you can use galvanized tubes for cold air. The heat from the stove is intense enough to oxidize the zinc but it's not not hot enough to vaporize the zinc so there is no hazard in using galvanized ducting.
You won't want to use it for the inside of the heat riser, however - the metal will quickly burn out.
If you can find barrels, half-barrel bells work extremely well.

Thanks pinhead, barrels aplenty here, i'll try to find some reading on bell's or maybe you can point me to some? I have some idea of what you mean but not enough to determine if and how to implement one
