I just discovered rocket stoves and this site in searches for efficient stoves for heating, and have the book on order. I also found the following on back yard metalcasting; www.backyardmetalcasting.com/hmkit.htmlThis got me thinking. What if you cast the basic rocket stove in refractory cement (the burn chamber and the flue), but have a removable J-pipe and exhaust so that the basic stove could double as a furnace for metal casting? Not sure if I am getting the terms right. Of course the flue would have to be taller than what is shown in the furnace in the link, but you get the idea. Also on that site are some designs for using a blower and waste oil to run the furnace. If this mechanism can be removed for wood burning/heating, it would be dual purpose. This would be a (somewhat) portable unit that could be used for a metal casting furnace, outdoor cooking/canning, or even boiling water in emergency situations. Maybe even for hydronic heating, though one would have to be careful with how this was set up to prevent making a steam boiler.

Yeah man! I've been thinking and wondering about that one for a little bit now.. My main question is, would it be possible to somehow do away with the blower, using the heat riser to produce the draft? I haven't tried but I'm VERY interested in knowing. Try it and let us know.
