The sideways burn is important. I think I remember that's because the air flows from the bottom of the fire through the coals into the combustion zone. In cooking rockets the air actually flows past the bottom of the fuel past the burning ends and into the combustion zone. A tlud does something similar.
So a rocket has this arrangment of air /fuel / flame plus a heat riser. Am I getting this right? Is there anything else that is needed to make a rocket a rocket?

A highly insulated burn chamber/heat riser.

My understanding so far is, an insulated chimney (heat riser) internal to the burn unit, is what makes a "Rocket Stove" a Rocket Stove..
