I've made the start of a mold and looking to experiment with some casting. The local masonry supply place only has availability to castable refractory that's rated to 2200 degrees. I'm trying to play around with Peter's small scale design in a 6” form. Is this lower temp stuff worth using?
The best I can tell, a earthenware/perlite mix may not be super durable after 1700 degrees but that's also much closer to free.

Nice looking mould but is there any chance you can host your photo on a different site please - it opens up surrounded with links to live porn cams, penis enlargement aids, hook-ups to MILFs 2 miles from me and pop-ups to gangster porn games!
Photobucket has ads but none that will get your wife wondering what you're looking at!

must say in relation to the sort of stuff that site is hosting that mold looks like a someone swallowed all the dick enlargement pills at once.

I've used the same grade for virtually all my experiments. The ones that failed happened to be the items that straight out of the mold has been heated up to the max in about two hours. So your supplier's refractory is suitable unless you are the same kind of ignorant pig as me. You need a vibrating table, definitely!

The 2200 degree stuff turned out to actually be 2700 degree rated when it picked it up. (Alsey 45 castable refractory.). I don't think they sell much of it as I purchased their only bag. I tried a silly experiment before I picked it up to make a casting in clay and perlite. it was a good run through to correct some uniformity in my mold box for the real deal. It turns out one 55# bag can only do half the mold.
The manufacturer's claim of a .44 cubic foot volume is obviously prior to vibration. I used a hammer drill all around the mold in hammer mode and it was amazing how the dry mix settled down and water came to the top. I used the midpoint of water recommended to the mix but I think the minimum would probably work with the vibration. Now another bag and I'll get to see how it works.

A picture of the half cast. Now I just have to wait a week for another bag.
