Hi! Two year ago I builted a cob oven with my family. I started the project during the winter, I hand hewed some hemlock timber to build the base. I did the dovetail joint Filled the base with sand Did a concrete slab on it and a template for the oven Blended the cob with the family Also builted a temporary roof for it, I will built a timber frame one next summer, post and beam style. and we make good food in it on a regular base. that is pretty it! We had lot of fun building it and we still have lot of fun with friends and family when using it. If you have question or comments dont hesitate! thank you!

That looks good! I love your base. I didn't see any insulation, How long does it stay hot? I have a brick 39"er with 4" of ceramic fiber on all sides....stays hot for days...I would think without insulation at least under the floor the concrete slab would turn into a heat sink. Is there a thermal break between the cast iron front door/frame and the cob? Food sure does taste better when its cooked in one of those things.

Hi thickstrings! Thank you! It doesn't have any insulation but it does have a layer of fire brick on the concrete slab to help with the heat loss. I didn't notice any trouble with the door/frame vs cob.
surely it could be more efficient but because it's a replica of an antique model, we live well with its defaults.
have known earlier I would have built a rocket oven for more effeciency .

Hi Alex
Great build. I love the base you made. I built a 4 inch rocket fired wood oven anl love it. Had I known how long it would take to get up to baking temp with the rocket, I would have made a 5 or 6 inch rocket. I usually fire it with wood in the oven to get it up to 400 F and then can keep it hot with the rocket. I built the rocket so that I can burn sticks or pellets using a mod like Rectifier's thread on "Reverse engineering thr Riley Pelet Burner. Wood fired oven food tastes great. Looking at your pizza males me want to fire mine up. Just a bit too cold now though.
