I have a used oven I will be converting to wood burning. I had planned to vent a rocket into the base, but I saw an idea the other day of building a black hearth clay oven as the "barrel" of a pocket rocket. Might have been Max over on Permies, I can't recall. Anyway , I thought that might be cool to do with my derelict oven. I would seperate the flame from the food with a layer of firebrick, to diffuse and store the heat. What yall think?

Ya mean dis? www.permies.com/forums/posts/list/38661#301667If yes, by any means try it! I haven't had time. One thing thought. Make it as a bell. With the exhaust pipe going down just a smidge higher than the feed tube bottom. Like this you would keep the heat in.

Ah, time for pet projects. My day was eaten up changing out the starter in the van. First starter change ever, next time it should take about an hour...
In the other thread you mentioned an insulated heat riser, but it seems to be set at a point in the oven where it would contribute no heat to the cooking process. Normal pocket rockets have no insulation, correct? I am guessing you included it so as to pollute less.
I think I will be venting a pocket, jtube or batch rocket into the oven instead of going with a black hearth. If I had a double wall oven, a pocket rocket in the lower oven would probably fit better than either of the other two, but mine is but a single oven, so no such issues exist. Instead my oven will be mounted rather high, as it needs to be above a six inch rocket!

The idea behind the insulated riser is to have more draft, hence more heat. Well, i'll test this myself then!
