I'm fascinated with masonry heaters, and variations of them. My father was a bricklayer and I was his brick tender / mortar mixer during many a hot summer. When I look at the fireplace he built for himself back in the 70's, I can't help but wonder how it would've worked with baffles/ contra flow etc.. As it is, he ended up putting an insert in it to get any kind of heat out of it.

I did the same thing one summer, boy I was a strong 15 year old after that...
Yeah I remember building fireplaces that my mason grandfather said were useless since they made no heat into the house, but the owners paid well... what a waste of time, money and materials...

I was looking at "riding the Russian rocket". It posits a that a traditional Russian single skin masonry heater with a modren firebox is a better choice than a rocket. It even shares a basic building schematic, but it is indecipherable.
Does anyone have good set of plans?

The efficiency numbers published here are significantly higher than the numbers in the HeatKit roport for mansonry heaters.

Not sure where you are kddid but the MHA offers workshops in the East. Maybe in the West too. I haven't checked on that.
