I posted another thread on the trouble I'm having with my RMH. It seems to run fine but I'm sure it's running a bit slow and cooler than it should. I increase the manifold around the barrel exit considerably in that the 22" gap is between 2" and 3" deep which should be plenty.
I think I may have found the issue. During the build I haven't insulated 2 sides of the back of the burn tunnel because of the space needed for the barrel manifold. Could this be the problem? Again the top of the barrel got to 250oC. Startup and draw is fine. I've listed diamensions on my other recent thread. The gap around the barrel is now 1.5"
Thanks Roy

Insulation (or lack of it) can make a HUGE difference! I'd insulate that thing.
For the sake of full disclosure though, it's possible that you could do a lot of work and get no noticeable change.. Personally, I'd do the work.

Agreed. Come to think of it, the image you (Roy) sent me doesn't show this transition.. ??

Ha! No worries man, I'm learning to run a forum currently and am deathly afraid I'm going to do the same thing every time I'm there.
Roy, I basically said that without insulation on the back of the tunnel there is heat in the manifold working against your draft. I'd certainly fix that, but most importantly I'd check the manifold again. I can't imagine how you'd have a slot there 22"x3". Can you post a pic of that area?

thanks for the replies. i have insulated the burn tunnel which increased the manifold a bit. i will post a picture later when i get to my other computer.
donkey made a very valid point on another post i started in that the RMH just has to heat the room gently and behave well so you don't end up smoked out. i already get a good draw and it heats the room nicely so maybe i should stop trying to get it running even better and just finish cobbing it and then sit on it and enjoy the warmth?
i just found that i didn't know what the stove should be doing if its running as it should.
my dilemma now is do i add a bit more on the heat riser and paint up another barrel or just leave it?
just to say the extra insulation didn't make that much difference as well as increasing the manifold. nice to check though.
