HI, I will be constructing a RMH shortly for operation by October. I assume all the bricks for the feed tube, tunnel, and stack use mortar. How much and what kind? Can I use clay and sawdust? Thanks in advance for your help.

I just dip the edges in (locally sourced) clay slip and stick 'em down. If the brick I'm trying to place wiggles a little, I'll use a VERY THIN schmeer of wood-ash/slip mortar ONLY where there is a need for filler. Wood-ash/slip is EXACTLY what it sounds like. I dig up some local clay rich dirt, turn it into slip, screen it through a fly screen and mix it with wood-ash to a doughy consistency.
Mortar is for holding the bricks apart to prevent wiggles. It is NOT for sticking bricks together, though it will do a little of that. Whatever mortar you choose, use as little of it as you can.
