My rocket stove burns really good and gets a 1/4" thick 6" ID pipe that is about 1 1/2 foot long glowing red/orange. Pretty neat fire.
The troulbe is even though it is 1/4" thick it is rusting and flaking off in bits after only a few burns. This is called spalling.
Does anyone know if I can coat the inside of the metal with a protective coating? Such as furnace cement maybe?
Stainless steel would be nice but it cost money, a lot of money.

Hi Peter. Well, been there done that, pretty much. This is with between 50 and 70 hours burn, the 4 inch hydraulic tube 1/4 walled was dead! Aluminized tube tends to hold a smidge better for the heat riser. But no steel will hold. Get yourself refractory tubing. I use stuff from Landini www.landinispa.com/landini/user.php?nid=138Thought, it's easy for me, i'm on the italian border.
