I wondering if anyone has any experience with a small bell chamber under the heat riser? The pipe i am using for the riser has a half inch wall thickness, so I have no way to cut it. In order to get the right height for my barrel in will sit on bricks above the burn tunnel. My system size is 7" (area =38.4 in.). This gives me a 7x7x4.25 inch space under the bottom of the riser. Would it be better to go with this setup or put a piece of 7"x4.25 piece of pipe within the bricks and fill in the spaces with fireclay? (I would attach a picture but my camera died last night)

If you are just talking about a little bit of extra space directly below the heat riser I don't think you have anything to worry about. I have built some rockets with much more space than you are talking about in that location and didn't notice any issues (but I didn't then try it with less space or exact system size to notice if there was improvement either)

thanks canyon, Yeah, it's caused by the riser sitting on a row of bricks sitting one higher than the top of the burn tunnel and going from a square shape to a round one. I'm going to try and round up another camera so I can some pics posted.

Right on, man.. You got the 'ol round onto square blues. Not a problem, mate.. Looks like the last brick in yer burn tunnel will need modification or removal. Ain't enough space for the pipe, if you stick it directly on the opening of that arrangement, it'll ride too far forward. You've got options, an easy one is: build the upper bit with brick, level to the top of the burn tunnel, this'll give you a flat place to park the pipe. Depending on your clearances, you may need to cut down the heat riser pipe, or raise the barrel. Also, notice what happens when you place an 8" round-pipe on a 7" square-tunnel, you've created a pinch. I usually "cheat" the bricks directly below the heat riser out a little for better clearance at the junction. Here's another way it can be done: Lately, I've been using thin metal, cutting a hole (to fit the heat riser pipe) and tacking it on a couple inches up the pipe. The plate will rest on the bricks and a little tab of pipe can stick down inside the brick. The bricks will tend not to fit tightly around the pipe tab, so ya gotta seal the mess with something like high heat cob.
