I built my first Rmh in 2013. 8" J tube with a piped mass. I had no clue what I was doing. Information back then was not as easily available. I used the standard suggested design. Two 8" pipes with 180 degree turn. I knew that I should install a clean-out but room was limited and I did not. After 7 years I am fixing that problem. My mass is contained by brick and cement board. The mass itself is cob and flat slate. I have dug down and exposed the 180 turn and a short section of each horizontal pipe. Removing the 180 completely, I dug down further to create a shallow depression for any ash. Next week. I will use brick and cob to seal this small "bell" back up. A roof of cement board or light metal will sit on brick or angle iron supports. A 3-4" layer of cob and rock will top it off.
