Hi all; Would like to tell you about our modifications to the 5 minute riser. I think you will like it! Introducing the new Six Minute riser! Barely properly tested due to the time of year. But passed test burns 100 % Cutting a slot in the metal casing of the 5 minute riser that exactly matches port size. I used " strips of superwool apx 1/4" - 1/2 " thick and using clay slip glued them to the back side of the port. The riser simply pushes up to the port. a few bricks cemented down around the bottom keeps it from walking. Extra pieces of blanket are pushed into place from the outside to completely seal the port. Cutting the slot we allowed one minute. Thus the new six minute riser! For pictures you'll need to visit Permies. permies.com/t/143274/Introducing-Minute-RiserOr checkout today's Stove Chat with Matt. We discuss it and there are photo's. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aRUeYDE3CrE

Here's one of belgiangulch's pictures from his collection of the 6 minute riser. Eliminates having to build the lower portion first, then put the 5 minute riser on top of it. Good job!

That's how I did it, though I didn't fold the CFB back over the edges of the port. That should definitely make it more robust. Good addition!

I love this idea! the riser is one of the most frustrating and expensive parts of the entire build if you want to build it from bricks and if you want to make it from cast I feel like it wears faster than a lot of the rest of of the unit (other than the loading section). I plan to use this 6 min riser design as the ultimate wear part. I can use 10" galvanized pipe lined with 2 layers of 1" ceramic fiber blanket for like $30-40 and should be easy to replace if it burns out. Thanks for the info!
