5 Years ago I tossed out my very old broken down wood stove, that last winter we used tons of wood and froze. I built a standard 8 inch J tube, with a bench and barrel. I built it as a test to see how it worked, well it worked way better then our old stove did, and in the 5 years we have learned it works better then a lot of our friends newer wood stoves.
I'm looking to replace/rebuild it now, as i had hastily put it together last time with just mud and bricks and a perlite riser.
My wife misses the look of the fire(which we didn't have in our wood stove as the glass had busted and i replaced with ceramic tiles as needed.) I have been following the DSR and DSR2 and various varations of here and other places.
My wife and I really like the look of the DSR/DSR2 being able to see the fire and also the batch capability.
So my question is , which direction should we head? what questions need to be asked/ answered to figure a direction?
our max foot print for our stove is about 40 inches by 136 inches. The chimney to the outside can be moved pretty much anywhere in that area. One long side is against an interior wall and one short side is along an exterior wall. We are looking at having a bench.
We noticed that a hollow bench is recommend rather then tubing for unrestricted flow.
Thanks!

Peter has stopped development on the dsr1 and hasn't finalized the dsr2. I would wait a bit longer. I think he is zeroing in on the final dsr2 design.

I second Joseph’s advice... especially if you are casting from or cutting expensive refractory materials.
I would start collecting materials and it is conceivable you could build your heat collection area with the side facing the buried area ready for whatever the final design for the DSR2 winds up being...
That is what I am doing at the moment...

Guess I've been getting antsy watching all Peters posts I still have a few months before I need to start heading in that direction, just wanted to get some opinions floating around.

Myself, i would go for a tried and proven batch. With a door in front you see the flames, and if you do it like my workshop heater, you can also see the glow at the top. Thought, i wouldn't do the workshop heater now, as i have done it before. Nearly all is perfect imho. But i would move the top door away from the heat riser, in order to have a black oven. And if i built it in a living space, i would have a low bell, to make a bench. permies.com/t/44806/Cobbling-workshop-heater#355830

That's pretty neat took a while for me to load all the images. That style is definitely a possibility.
