I have a 24'x30'x 21' tall shop that leaks air like a sieve. Probably no way to seal it much better. I don't spend a lot of time in the shop, but when I do, I need heat fast! I have a woefully undersized wood stove that I intend to sell and build either a rmh/rocket stove, or a batch box. I have no fabrication experience with metal, so will need to have a shop fabricate the box. That is my dilemma! $ is an object, and a batch box will add substantially to the cost. If I can build the batch box from firebrick that would save me money.
I have a shop that is a post and beam building with a vertical exhaust pipe. I have read Erica and Ernie's book, but they never address batch boxes, so I am very interested in what experiments you are doing here! This is a fantastic wealth of information.
Here are my needs: fast heat in a large area. I can tend a stove, but would prefer to toss wood in and forget it. I have room to put a firebox and one or more bells.
1.Can I just add several vertical 55 gal drums in a daisy chain arrangement for bells? That seems the easiest to me for my purposes. If so, how many drums can I place in tandem?
2. Can I place random rock inside the drums for mass, or is there a prescribed arrangement? Do I need mass in the drums?
I'm sure these questions have all been answered elsewhere, but I would need days and days to dig through the posts to find them!
Thanks for all of your help!

The stacked drums are forming one single bell. 2. Can I place random rock inside the drums for mass, or is there a prescribed arrangement? Do I need mass in the drums? No, you don't need mass in the drums since holding heat for hours isn't necessary in your situation.

Happy New Year, Peter!
I have watched your videos and read most of what you have written. That is very informational. Thank you for all of your work. With the 3 barrel system, can I also add a pebble bench? Say 3 meters. I have a cat that sleeps in my shop and she would love that heat. If I understand you, that may reduce the draw too much.

A pebble bench isn't very effective, you need to run the heater for hours on end before it'll warm up sufficiently. The 3 barrel setup is right at the limit of what such a 6" system could drive so adding a bench of whatever construction will hamper draft big time. In your case I'd leave out one barrel and build a bell bench at the side. A short one, equivalent to the internal surface area of one barrel. Long enough for the cat and/or a visitor.
Best wishes for 2019.
