So after 30 years i'm finally making the shop heated instead of climate controlled. Mostly this consists of doors that seal , pouring the rest of the floor with concrete and adding insulation (what an innovative idea!) The best part is the old double barrel shop stove has rusted out to the point of it must be replaced this summer. Despite the popularity of batch burners I like my J tubes. I had been thinking of an 8" J with 2 or even 3 large brick bells...BUT... Lately the thought of building a 10" J has been bouncing around my head... (lots of empty space there) ( NO, the shop not my head...) I seem to recall Ernie writing that 10 or even 12" J tubes were possible but the high heat & size involved was problematical. Anybody out there tried larger J tubes ? How big might I build a bell system if I went that large ? Anybody got some input on dimension's ?

I don't imagine a 10-inch J Tube would put out more heat (or even as much) as an 8-inch Batch Box.
Other than the logistics of physically building a large J, I don't see any specific caveats to watch out for that wouldn't likewise apply to an 8 inch batch build.
