I’m trying out Peter’s double shoe box design to build a 6” batch box complete system self contained in one 55 gallon barrel with 11” of the base of a second barrel as a pedestal/manifold. We made our first fire tonight and the top of the barrel got to 800 degrees fairly easily given the poor wood we had on hand. Exhaust was almost clear but I still have to add more air holes in the door frame. Looks good so far, the horizontal feed of the secondary air supply could be bigger, maybe even twice as big.

Doubling it up would be best, making the port smaller for that reason doesn't sound really sensible to me...

Looks good so far, the horizontal feed of the secondary air supply could be bigger, maybe even twice as big. I was able to open up the horizontal feed of the secondary air in the ceramic fiber board under the firebox floor to 4”x1”. (It was 2”x1”.) I’ve drilled seven 3/4” holes in the bottom of the door frame which can be opened and closed with a simple slide, as well as six on the bottom sides, three on the bottom left and three on the bottom right. A 3/4” hole is 0.44 square inches (I think?), so this should supply plenty of air, even with the higher demands of the double shoebox design. We’ll fire it again on Saturday and see if the exhaust completely clears.

Here are the 3/4” air inlets in the firebox door frame. After the first burn I added those on the left and right to provide more air and created the sliding control for those on the bottom, as well as widened the secondary air channel from 2”x1” to 4”x1” as per Peter’s recommendations.
