Black indicates incomplete combustion and white water.

Hydrocarbons from burning oil or tar in cigarette smoke give smoke a bluish color. White smoke indicates water from condensation or problems with the motor cooling system.

Smoke = incomplete combustion. If white, it can be because of moisture in the smoke, which has created incomplete combustion. But it also can be because the level of unburned hydrocarbons is enough to create smoke, but not enough to become black. I'd say the colors vary from no smoke, to faint to white, to grey, to darker gray, to even darker gray, to black. Black is like an american diesel truck on full blast.

Straw burns at low temperatures and releases a lot water in a short time. Dry biofuel is converted to quite a lot water.
