I get asked this question all the time: What is the difference between a Rocket Stove and other types of stove?
To answer the question properly I'll have to first define some terms.. In a normal stove the chimney, the stack, or the flue are all pretty much inter-changeable terms. They are a pipe that creates draft (or draw) AND takes the smoke out of the house.. For a Rocket Stove we have to separate these words (almost arbitrarily) into two distinct terms. Lets call the pipe that takes the smoke away the chimney and the one that creates draft the stack..
The difference is that the stack is INSIDE the stove, put another way the device for creating draft is inside the Rocket Stove itself and the pipe for taking smoke out is a separate affair placed elsewhere!!
Err.. Lets chew on that for a while and see if any debate points or questions pop out.. ??

Rocet stove to piec bez komina , nie jest tu wymagany wcale ci¹g kominowy , spaliny s¹ ,po prostu, wyrzucane do przewodu dymowego i trzeba zapewniæ jedynie odpowiednio du¿y przekrój dla swobodnego odprowadzenia.
To szczególny przypadek , bardzo ma³a bezw³adnoœæ procesu spalania i kumulacja wewn¹trz gor¹cego szybu niesamowitej si³y wypornoœci.
Rocket Stove to piec, któy mo¿na w ka¿dej chwili, w prosty sposób ''wy³¹czyæ" dziêki znikomej bezw³adnoœci paleniska. W normalnym piecu jest to bardzo utrudnione bo palenisko jest o duzej masie. Tak ogólnie ja to rozumiem bez zbêdnej filozofii..

And, though I suppose not a requirement, rocket stove convention suggests a heavily insulated "stack" and burn tunnel.

Right. According to theory, since the heat riser is the acting stack and it is quite short, (compared to a standard chimney) it needs to run very hot to provide draft. Yes, the insulated heat riser and burn tunnel are almost a requirement.

Lets not forget the "vacuum maker" or the heat exchange barrel. The more the barrel cools the flowing gases the bigger the vacuum it creates in the "barrel bell" in relation the the pressures in the heat riser. The greater the relative vacuum in the barrel the greater the stack effect of the short hot heat riser.
