Would Meeco's Red Devil fireplace cement and mortar work with perlite and Lincoln 60 fire clay? I am leaning towards Matt Walkers recipe at 14:14:1 perlite/clay/cement for the core and a mix of 8:1:1 for the riser.
Thoughts?

I'm not familiar with Meeco's red devil ,but Matts recipe works well with just about anything. One tip on casting your riser is, when you come up above the 16 gal. barrel make your mix heavy on the fireclay for the last exposed section of your riser , it seems to be stronger that way. Also adding sodium silicate (water glass) will help make everything stronger. If I was casting a core again I would definitely add as much refractory and waterglass to the feed tube side and the top half of my casting as I could afford, as I had wear issues in mine at both those spots.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep that in mind.
Anyone used Meeco's in a cast core?

worth reading the geopolymer thread as well. lots of really useful stuff on there particularly on using sodium silicate.

The Meeco contains all the SoSi you need.
